Koger to compete in Celebrity Softball Classic http://gutenberg.tv/koger-to-compete-in-celebrity-softball-classic/ http://gutenberg.tv/koger-to-compete-in-celebrity-softball-classic/#respond Thu, 10 Jun 2021 05:20:19 +0000 http://gutenberg.tv/koger-to-compete-in-celebrity-softball-classic/

Owensboro native Jason Koger, a senior bilateral amputee who is now a national motivational speaker, plays in the Celebrity Softball Classic Saturday in Arlington, Texas. The Classic benefits the Plis d’Honneur and the Veterinarians for the Relief of Children.

“I always love doing charity events no matter what it is,” Koger said. “It’s a great opportunity to share my story.

Koger used his story to inspire others and share the message of resilience after a tragedy. He said he is honored to be invited to play for this cause.

“I might not play a lot,” he said. “I just want to show them that my accident didn’t stop me. I was not asked because I am a big celebrity. The man who asked me to play said that I inspired him and he wanted me to inspire others.

According to the event’s website, the family event features mixed teams with players who are professional athletes, musicians, and actors from film / television or reality shows.

The first game of the day will be a co-ed game of veteran celebrities comprised of “America’s top veteran influencers who have had incredible military careers.” The second game of the day will be a celebrity softball game.

Koger’s teammates include NFL players from the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Chicago Bears, as well as several television personalities and a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“All the celebrities who will be here are really cool; one of the event coordinators told me that there isn’t a celebrity playing this game who thinks she’s too good or stuck, ”Koger said. “They will take pictures with you or sign autographs. We are all here for the same reason.

When a prosthetic company offered to make him special attachments for the game, Koger was very grateful.

“A company called Fillauer Prosthetics contacted me and made a special glove for the game. I also have a special attachment from them so that I can hold a baseball bat,” Koger said.

Koger, who hasn’t played softball since his accident, said he finally gave it a try last week.

“My son Axel and I went out into the yard – he threw and I hit,” Koger said. “I asked my daughters to film me. It was my very first time putting on softball arm restraints. It’s not about winning or losing against me; it goes to a good cause.

When asked what position he wanted to play in, Koger joked that he would go where the ball doesn’t go very often.

“I told them to put me in the right field,” Koger said.

Ultimately, the Celebrity Softball Classic organization is happy that the event can take place this year. Koger was supposed to play last year, but matches have been called off due to COVID-19.

“It’s nice to be a part of something that I’ve never been a part of before,” he said. “It’s rare to find a bilateral arm amputee, but there are still a lot of interesting things that we can do. “

Are there limits to using celebrities to discuss race and mental health? | Nesrine Malik http://gutenberg.tv/are-there-limits-to-using-celebrities-to-discuss-race-and-mental-health-nesrine-malik/ http://gutenberg.tv/are-there-limits-to-using-celebrities-to-discuss-race-and-mental-health-nesrine-malik/#respond Mon, 07 Jun 2021 05:00:00 +0000 http://gutenberg.tv/are-there-limits-to-using-celebrities-to-discuss-race-and-mental-health-nesrine-malik/

NOTAomi Osaka’s withdrawal from Roland Garros, after the tennis player was threatened with suspension for refusing to attend press conferences in the name of her sanity, is the most recent example of the war which is played out between the celebrities and the establishment, through which the public justify their own grievances.

These incidents can appear to be fabricated media culture war events – igniting as quickly as they go out, and fueled by the cheap social media ignition, then extinguished by our weak attention span. But there is something more substantial about them in that they define or shape a much larger clash between two value systems.

In a corner, there are those who ask or demand that their personal experiences and their identities be respected, that they be better treated, that they be above all believed. In the opposite corner stand those who are angry with this new world in which the feelings of people are ceded at the expense of established institutions, processes and practices – be it press conferences, academic programs or of royal protocol.

Osaka embodies two contested issues: race and sanity. Equal rights between races and the validity of mental health problems are universally accepted principles. There is no shortage of leading personalities ready to speak out about their own mental health issues.

But we still argue over the most basic ways to show our support for these causes, like taking the knee, or whether we believe people’s mental health claims. What is becoming clear is that there is a large consensus that racism is bad and we need to care about mental health, but very little appetite to do anything to make the world fairer or more accommodating.

Generational divisions, political ideology, general ignorance and outright prejudices underlie this resistance to change. But there is also something about the way these causes are expressed and supported that they are lacking. Celebrities, high profile personalities and influencers have a contradictory impact – they have wide reach, but their richness seems incongruous with the pain they are trying to highlight. You couldn’t, if you tried, find less sympathetic ambassadors for the pain of racism or poor mental health than pop stars, royalty and the world’s elite athletes. This makes it easy to present their complaints as tantrums rather than calls for help. There is undoubtedly a cost to being bound by the rules of a competitive world that fetishes individual success and stigmatizes failure. But that pain, compared to struggling with racism and mental health issues without any resources, is a tough sell.

But that’s the catch: the suffering of those who have no profile or platform is also unpopular, so we depend on prominent people to have these debates in the first place. The centrality of fame is the result of a media landscape in which it is increasingly difficult to make money without providing content related to high traffic individuals and lifestyles. This coating of bitter issues means that we can no longer approach these issues without leaving them glamorous. As we trivialize them, we invite public skepticism, exacerbating the conflict between believers and deniers.

There is an overabundance of first-person accounts of racism and mental health issues, but few of them relate, for example, to the barbaric treatment of ethnic minority refugees and asylum seekers in detention; or the anguish of those stranded on inhumane NHS waiting lists; or how the deprivations of racism and mental health are disproportionately inflicted on low-income people. There is pressure, especially on women and people of color, to perform trauma and pack it well for consumption and virality. The result is that we fail to see that racial and mental health crises are disorderly, intractable, and linked to intractable socio-economic factors.

The liberal goodwill towards the causes and the general ignorance of structural remedies mean that we live in a climate where we seem to talk about these issues all the time, creating the impression of a society saturated with sympathy and solidarity, but truly quite hostile to change. We are encouraged to take care of ourselves, but we are limited in how we look after ourselves without committing to a system that heals us little and harms others a lot. Our diversions, meals, and groceries are delivered by those on less than minimum wage, by others with zero hour contracts, on behalf of companies leveraging these farms for profit. These companies, in a sort of marketing ouroboros (in which a snake or a dragon eats its own tail), are successfully co-opting the rhetoric of anti-racism or mental health awareness, when little is being done to address the issues. systemic problems to which they contribute.

The gap between the focus on race and sanity and the lack of action means that while people always speak out about fighting injustice, it’s easy to describe them as whiners.. Their detractors can then position themselves as realists, relying not on personal experience but on facts, pointing out with exasperation all the (unnecessary) ways in which we revere and enshrine the rights of others. This is not a fair setup. Osaka’s critics may be displaying unfathomable cruelty, but she and all the other victims are equally disappointed with those same parties that claim to support them.
